Shipyard EVSE 12-Port — Use-Case & TCO (US)

This page evaluates a 12-port EVSE cluster sized for cold-ironing and yard-vehicle charging at a US shipyard. TCO arithmetic is shown end-to-end so the buyer can swap values for their own duty profile.

TCO formula and worked arithmetic

The annualized TCO per port and levelized cost of energy (LCOE, USD/kWh) are computed as follows.

Cash paid per port = hardware + install = 2,800 + 2,200 = USD 5,000.

Crf (capital recovery factor) = r × (1+r)^n / ((1+r)^n − 1) where r = 0.07 and n = 12.

(1+r)^n = 1.07^12. 1.07^2 = 1.1449; 1.07^4 = 1.1449^2 = 1.31079601; 1.07^8 = 1.31079601^2 = 1.71818618; 1.07^12 = 1.71818618 × 1.31079601 ≈ 2.25219159.

Crf = 0.07 × 2.25219159 / (2.25219159 − 1) = 0.157653411 / 1.25219159 ≈ 0.125899.

Annualized CapEx per port = 5,000 × 0.125899 = USD 629.50 per port-year.

Peak demand per port = 30 kW × 0.60 = 18 kW.

Annual demand charge per port = 18 kW × 14.00 USD/kW-month × 12 months = 18 × 168 = USD 3,024 per port-year.

Annual kWh per port = 30 kW × 2,500 h = 75,000 kWh per port-year.

Annual energy cost per port = 75,000 × 0.12 = USD 9,000 per port-year.

Annual O&M per port = fixed + variable = 180 + (75,000 × 0.02) = 180 + 1,500 = USD 1,680 per port-year.

Total annualized cost per port = 629.50 + 3,024 + 9,000 + 1,680 = USD 14,333.50 per port-year.

Cluster annualized cost (12 ports) = 14,333.50 × 12 = USD 172,002 per cluster-year.

LCOE = Total annualized cost per port / Annual kWh per port = 14,333.50 / 75,000 = USD 0.1911 per kWh.

Sensitivity table

Each cell recomputed from the formula: LCOE = (annualized CapEx + demand charge + energy + O&M) / (kW per port × utilization hours). Rows vary utilization, columns vary demand charge.

Annual utilization (h) \ Demand charge (USD/kW-mo)8.0011.0014.0017.0020.00
1,5000.2990.3310.3630.3950.427
2,0000.2340.2550.2760.2970.318
2,5000.1970.2120.2270.2420.257
3,0000.1710.1830.1940.2060.217
3,5000.1530.1620.1710.1800.189

Worked example for 2,500 h × 14.00 USD/kW-mo: annualized CapEx 629.50, demand = 18 × 14 × 12 = 3,024, energy = 75,000 × 0.12 = 9,000, O&M = 180 + 75,000 × 0.02 = 1,680; sum = 14,333.50; divided by 75,000 = 0.1911 (table reflects USD/kWh). Sensitivity values use the same formula with kWh = 30 × utilization hours and the column's demand rate.

Verdict by scenario

Across all scenarios, the cluster remains financially tractable only if the host site can secure an industrial or interruptible rate schedule; residential-class rates on a shipyard will not pass internal hurdle rates without managed charging.
